How to Install WordPress plugins

WordPress plugins are created to add functionality to your website. With plugins, you can add new extra features or enhance features that were already available to your site like shopping carts, contact forms, newsletters, etc. You can download WordPress plugins from your admin area and from 3rd party sites.

To download plugins from go to your
Dashboard > Plugins> Add New

From there, you will be directed to the WordPress plugin directory where you can search for plugins you would like to install.

To search for plugins go to the search bar to start looking for a specific plugin. You can type in keywords or a functionality you are looking for. After pressing search you will be shown the available plugins for you to download. For example below, I searched for “spam control” for my WordPress blog commenting and I got the following results:

Once you’ve found the plugin you decided to go with, you  can click on it to view details, reviews and screenshots. To start installing it click on the “Install Now” button.

The plugin will start installing on the same page you’re in.


Once it’s done downloading you can go to the section on left menu: Plugins > Installed Plugins to view settings for your plugins.

A WordPress plugin once installed on your site, will only work when you activate it. So go ahead and click on the activate plugin link to “Activate” the plugin on your WordPress site.

You can also delete plugins from here. To delete them make sure they are deactivated and press “Delete

That’s all, you have successfully installed your first WordPress plugin.

The next step is to configure the plugin settings. These settings will vary for each plugin therefore, we will not be covering that in this post.
